This colorway was inspired by Amy Sherald's painting, Trans Forming Liberty. The painting depicts a dark skinned trans woman boldly posing like the Statue of Liberty. Instead of a torch, her "beacon-hand" holds flowers while her other hand rests on her hip. Amy Sherald was all set to bring her acclaimed "American Sublime" show to the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery this summer. However, when she heard that the museum was considering removing this painting from the show, she canceled her show. The New Yorker covers it here.
As you may or may not know, Amy Sherald is a Baltimore artist who I have admired since I met her at a magazine launch party in 2016. She's showing us now what it means to be brave, even when it's not professionally advantageous or safe. This yarn color honors her choice to be brave. And it reminds us all of the bravery that trans people in America have to choose every single day that they get up and walk out into the world. Being trans in America means that your very existence is an act of bravery and resistance.
I'm honored to support Baltimore Safe Haven with proceeds from this colorway.
