FAQs

How did Neighborhood Fiber Co. get started?

Neighborhood Fiber Co. began in the kitchen of a basement apartment in the LeDroit Park neighborhood of Washington, DC. Stirred by her surroundings, Karida Collins set out to provide the world with hand-dyed yarns inspired by and named to reflect the natural beauty and diverse neighborhoods throughout the nation’s capital. Since then, she has added many more colors to reflect a multitude of neighborhoods, both inside and outside of DC. Now based in Baltimore, MD, Neighborhood Fiber Co. continues to offer vibrant, one-of-a-kind colors inspired by urban landscapes.

Where are you located? Can I come visit/shop?

Our studio store is located in an old firehouse in downtown Baltimore at 700 N. Eutaw Street (where N. Eutaw, Centre, and Druid Hill meet). Our production studio is downstairs and the yarn shop is on the 2nd floor.

Store Hours:
Friday & Saturday, 11-5
Curbside pickup for online orders is available Tuesday-Saturday, 9-5

How does curbside pickup work?

When you're ready to check out on our online store, select Local Pickup as your shipping option. When it's ready for you to pickup, you'll receive a Ready for Pickup notification in your email. Since we sometimes have to dye yarn for orders, please wait until you receive the Ready for Pickup notification before coming to collect your order. When you arrive, give us a call at 410-989-3770 so we can bring your order out to you, or ring the doorbell at our delivery entrance on Eutaw St. You can also pick up your order in the studio during our open hours on Friday and Saturday.

Want to make sure your order will be ready quick? Give us a call to make sure the items are in stock. We can also arrange same-day pickup between 11-5 if possible.

Is your location ADA-accessible?

The main entrance of our first floor, where our production studio is located, is ramped and wheelchair accessible. However, our second floor, where our store is located, can only be accessed by stairs. We apologize for the inaccessibility to our customers with disabilities. If you're interested in shopping with us and are unable to use stairs, please let us know so we can organize a shopping experience for you on our first floor.

Where should I park?

The 700 block of N. Eutaw Street! It is only 1 block north of the firehouse and there is rarely anyone parked there. Street parking in the area is metered ($2 per hour), though you can sometimes find free parking if you're willing to look.

Should you wish to take public transportation, we are only 1 block up the hill from the Centre Street Light Rail station.

I heard you're moving locations. Will that affect my visit?

Not yet! We are still fully operational at 700 N Eutaw Street. When our moving date is upon us, we will likely be closed to all in-person shopping - but that won't be for some time, and we'll do our best to fulfill orders online during the moving process.

Do you accept returns/exchanges?

Returns within 60 days of purchase will have the full price refunded in the same method of payment. Returns after 60 days will receive store credit. Please note that we are only able to accept returns and exchanges of products purchased directly from Neighborhood Fiber Co. from our retail shop or through our online store. Returns and exchanges of yarn purchased at shows will be handled on a case by case basis. Please contact us for more information.

We are happy to accept returns and exchanges provided you have a receipt (email copy is fine) and the product is in its original condition. This means the tag and dye ties (the cotton strings) are still attached and the yarn has not been wound or re-skeined. We are unable to accept returns on any yarn that has other animal fiber on it or has a noticeable smell (perfume, smoke, etc.).

If you have changed your mind about your purchase or would like to exchange for another color or base, please return or ship the yarn back to our studio at 700 N Eutaw Street. Please be aware that because of the nature of hand-dyeing, as well as differences in the monitor display settings on individual computers, there may be some variance in color between the product photo of the yarn on our website and the skein(s) you receive. If there is a problem with the yarn (knots, breaks, spinning defects, stains; you received the wrong color, quantity, or base), please contact us so we can further assist you. Unless you have been mailed the wrong product or the item is defective, you will be responsible for return shipping costs.

Limited edition colors, discounted yarn, club membership payments and club yarn, Block Party yarns, and yarns purchased on sale are final and nonrefundable.

What is your cancellation policy for classes?

Class fees are not refundable to the original form of payment unless the class is cancelled by Neighborhood Fiber Co. If the customer cancels prior to 7 days before the class, store credit will be issued. We cannot refund class fees or issue store credit within 7 days of the scheduled class.

Dye Retreat fees are not refundable to the original form of payment unless a retreat is cancelled by Neighborhood Fiber Co. If the customer cancels prior to 30 days before the class, store credit will be issued. We cannot refund retreat fees or issue store credit within 30 days of the scheduled class.

*Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis with ongoing public health and safety concerns.

*Classes taught by visiting teachers may have different cancellation policies. Please refer to specific class listing.

There is a problem with my yarn, what should I do?

If there is a dye or spinning defect, please let us know! We are only human and sometimes we make mistakes. We are extremely proud of what we make and want our customers to be happy, so we will make it right! If you purchased yarn from your LYS store, please return it to the store and they can contact us.

Do you custom dye yarn to match my couch/rug/heirloom quilt?

Generally speaking, we only dye colors developed in our studio working with our existing dyes. However, we offer custom dye services for special events, when we will be happy to dye yarn inspired by whatever you'd like (please note that we will not custom dye yarn to match another company's yarn).

I have a previously purchased skein that I am trying to match. Do you have dye lots?

We do not track dye lots. We dye yarn in 24 quart pots with between 3 and 10 skeins per pot, depending on the yarn. Just because 2 skeins came out of the same pot does not mean they will match! That said, we are more than happy to match any skeins you have. We prefer that you send the skein (or a sample) that you are trying to match to the studio so we can match it for you. If this isn't an option for you, we will do our best with a picture. If we do not have a good match available, we charge a $10 fee to dye custom matched yarn. Alternatively, if the yarn is still in original condition (see our returns/exchanges policy above), we can treat the original skein as an exchange and send you new, matching ones.

Will you wind my skein for me?

Yes! Ball winding can be added to your order. Please see the listing for more details.
