If you've shopped with us before, you've probably noticed that our speckled colorways are named for artists. When we were developing our special color for the 2021 New York State Sheep & Wool Festival, the first in-person show we'd be attending since the beginning of the pandemic, we wanted to honor an artist whose work spoke to a sense of rebirth, return, and homecoming. We soon realized that a poet encapsulated this best.
Lucille Clifton was born and raised in New York, but lived much of her life in Baltimore. From 1971-1974, she was poet-in-residence at Coppin State University, and from 1979-1985, she served as the Poet Laureate of Maryland. A Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize winner and a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (among her many awards and accolades), Clifton was truly one of America's great contemporary poets. Read her poem "won't you celebrate with me" here.
