Description: The Production Technician will assist in multiple areas and zones of the production process with special focus on the dye kitchen. This position’s responsibilities include preparing yarn and fiber for dyeing, rinsing yarn, working in the dye kitchen, following proprietary dye recipes, twisting skeins, tagging yarn, and packaging final products. Dye and production responsibilities are shared with other production technicians. They will coordinate with the NFC President, Customer Relations and Inventory Manager and coworkers to expedite and complete tasks to meet the company’s production schedule. This position performs routine maintenance of the dye facilities, organizing and stock supplies necessary for processes performed within the dye kitchen. Monitor supply levels and communicate material, chemical and equipment needs with supervising managers and coworkers. This position requires physical strength, bending, lifting, twisting, pulling, standing and pushing.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Perform dye methods required for production including, but not limited to; kettle dying, speckling, ombre shawl and sock blank dyeing 
  • Plan around the properties and requirements of all yarn and fiber bases used by NFC
  • Abide by the best practice environmental health and safety guidelines outlined in the hazard communications provided by NFC
  • Learn and follow proprietary NFC recipes with consistent results
  • Review dye lists and prepare the space for daily dye tasks
  • Soak, rinse, spin-dry, hang and dye yarn/fiber on a daily basis
  • Receive undyed yarn delivered from the mill and organize it into storage.
  • Use appropriate machinery, equipment, and protocols to prepare undyed fiber for dyeing.
  • Twist, label and package dyed yarn and fiber for sale.
  • Mix and prepare bulk liquid dye solutions and color formulas 
  • Custom order fulfillment and color matching 
  • Refilling bulk powdered dyes while wearing p100 respirator
  • Fill and move pots to and from the stove (30 pots or more weighing 35lbs each on average)   
  • Cleaning and seasoning the stove as well as all other dye kitchen tools and equipment
  • Complying with procedures as outlined by NFC training
  • Complying with all environmental health and safety requirements outlined by OSHA and during hazard communication training
  • Shared employee cleaning duties and other tasks as assigned

Required for Position

  • Proof of COVID vaccination required 
  • Masking required while at work as a general COVID prevention method
  • Able to wear a half face respirator for portions of the job that require the use of powdered dyes
  • Highly organized and strong communication skills
  • Familiar with acid dyes and their applications such as immersion and direct dye processes
  • A demonstrated knowledge of color theory and color matching
  • Able to bend, pull, push and lift over 35lbs repetitively and on a daily basis
  • High School education or above

Preferred for Position

  • Demonstrated experience with dye techniques specific to yarn
  • Production experience 
  • Experience with acid dyes and wool, particularly yarn
  • BFA or textile related degree
